Green Meadows West Prairie

2022 Guided prairie walks: next is Tues September 6th at 7:00 pm. Meet at Windsor Park off of Kings Row.

Here in Johnston, Iowa, the Green Meadows West community has become a leader in the effort to restore the unique prairie ecosystem that once dominated the Iowa landscape. Through the guidance of the GMW HOA, and the efforts of Dr. Inger Lamb and her team at Prairie Landscapes of Iowa, we have established and maintain over 16 acres of reconstructed tall grass prairie habitat, including dozens of species of native prairie plants.

The GMW Prairie is important not only for the natural beauty it provides to our residents, but also for managing rain water and providing natural habitat to species such as monarchs and native bees. This website is designed to share this project that we are so proud of, and to provide tools for education and appreciation of this jewel in the heart of Johnston. Please check out the tabs at the top of this page to explore more about prairie.
